Using vacuum coffee makers

  1. Remove the wick and wick holder from the spirit lamp assembly.
  2. Fill the lamp bowl with the fuel (methylated spirits / camp stove alcohol / denatured alcohol). This should be sufficient for 6-8 uses before requiring a refill.
  3. Replace the wick and wick holder into the lamp bowl. Allow the wick to absorb the fuel thoroughly.
  4. Put the spirit lamp assembly on the stand base and the funnel in its aperture (hole to the uninitiated) on the stand's handle.
  5. Fill the bottom bowl with cold water to within about 1cm from the base of the neck. Hot water may be used to speed the process.
  6. Press the rubber gasket into the bowl neck. Then place the funnel into the bottom bowl.
  7. Place the glass drainer loosely into the funnel.
  8. Place approximately 7g of medium ground coffee per cup, in the funnel.
  9. Light the wick.
  10. As the water heats it will raise the drainer and rise into the funnel.
  11. Allow, approximately, 3 minutes for the coffee to infuse; stir during this period to achieve the best result.
  12. Place the extinguisher on the lamp assembly.
  13. As the bottom bowl cools, the vacuum will cause the clear infused liquor to be sucked back into the bottom bowl, leaving the spent coffee grinds in the funnel.
  14. Remove the funnel. Place it in the aperture (yes, that hole again) on the stand.
  15. Pour and enjoy.
